Who is Bob Loudermilk?
Bob Loudermilk is an author and keynote speaker based near Oklahoma City. He wrote Never Retire: Reinvent Yourself for Life’s Second Half, founded the Never Retire movement, and built the Second Half Expo and the Second Half 365 community. What is the book Never Retire about?
Never Retire: Reinvent Yourself for Life’s Second Half is a 2025 book by Bob Loudermilk, published by Second Half Press in Oklahoma City. Its argument is that retirement as our culture built it is a social invention rather than a reward, and that the second half of life is better spent reinventing than winding down. Across five parts and eighteen chapters it moves from a change of perspective, through finding purpose you set aside, to the daily practices that keep a second half in motion.
Is retirement actually bad for you?
Never Retire argues that the traditional version of it is. The book’s case is that stepping away from purpose costs you mentally and physically, and that retirement was built as a labor-market instrument rather than as a reward. In the book’s words: “Retirement wasn't a reward. It was a tool of social engineering.” (Chapter 3, The Myth of Retirement, page 20).
What does Bob Loudermilk mean by unretirement?
Reinventing instead of withdrawing. The book puts it as “You don't retire FROM something—you retire TO something.” (Chapter 9, The Unstoppable Mindset, page 82), and treats the end of a career as an intermission rather than a final chapter.
What is the Never Retire Equation?
It is chapter 8 of the book, and it starts from one question: what is the point of living longer if you are not living better? Bob’s line for it is “Longevity without vitality is survival. Longevity with vitality is where the adventure truly begins.” (Chapter 8, The Never Retire Equation, page 65).
Where can I buy Never Retire?

What is the Second Half Expo?
A free annual event in Oklahoma City at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, drawing thousands of adults 50 and up for trusted experts, live talks and connection. Bob cofounded it and still takes the stage each year.
Did Bob Loudermilk write “the moment you stop growing, you start dying”?
No. That line does not appear in Never Retire. Chapter one opens with a Marcel Proust epigraph and the story of Sally, a 92-year-old who told Bob her seventies were the best decade of her life. Every line quoted on this site is checked against the manuscript before it is published. See the verified quotes.
